Young professionals expect strong YP Iowa Conference turnout; council approves city sponsorship

Local and state young professionals group representatives are hoping for a strong turnout in Spencer for the YP Iowa Conference Sept. 20 and 21.

The annual conference offers young professionals across the state opportunities to network and develop professionally and personally with keynote speakers and breakout sessions.

On Monday, the Spencer City Council approved a $500 sponsorship of the event.

Paul Daniels, who helps lead the Spencer USA young professionals group and sits on the Young Professionals of Iowa board, attended Monday’s meeting. He told the council Spencer could expect to see people attending the YP Iowa Conference spend money in the community.

“A lot of people are going to be staying in hotels overnight,” he said. “People are going to be coming in on Thursday night for a social night and then an all-day event on Friday, so we’re pretty excited.”

The young professionals are working hard to advertise the YP Iowa Conference, including on social media.

“It’s going to be a really good deal for Spencer,” Daniels said about the conference. “Potentially, right now, we’re set at 150 attendees, but I think there’s a chance we might have to think about trying to expand that, actually. I think we’re at 70 registrations already in our early bird hasn’t even ended. That ends on Aug. 31.”

Daniels said that’s a good response compared to previous years for the annual event.

“Normally at this time they maybe have 20 or 30 (registrants),” he said. “We’re more than double that pace.”

Daniels said 150 attendees would be a success.

“If we hit the 150 mark, we’ll well exceed their best event ever and normally it’s in Ankeny, Sioux City, bigger places,” he said.

The event typically is held in larger cities. Spencer Mayor Kevin Robinson asked Daniels how often the YP Iowa Conference is held in smaller communities.

“Very rare,” Daniels said. “A number of years ago it was in Carroll.”

The event will be held at the Clay County Fair and Events Center. For more information and registration instructions, visit ypiowaconference.com.
