A large amount of rain has caused flooding in some areas of Spencer Thursday morning.
In some cases, streets had to be closed because the water was too deep for cars to pass through safely.
“You had surface water flooding, which was coming off higher-elevation farm fields or surrounding land,” Public Works Director Mark White said. “That was an issue in some areas with the surface water running. And then, phase two of that would be the storm sewer was full, as well, or became full. So then you compounded that affect.”
The National Weather Service (NWS) issued a flood warning until further notice and a flash flood watch until 1 p.m. for Spencer. According to a notice, rainfall rates are expected to decrease as the morning continues.
The Little Sioux River was at 10.82 feet deep at 5 a.m. Thursday, according to an NWS notice. Flood stage is 10 feet.
The river is expected to crest at 13.8 feet by 7 p.m.
