H.S. football preview: Spencer (4-1, 1-0) at Storm Lake (4-1, 1-0)

Spencer visits Storm Lake tonight in a battle between two teams looking to add a fifth win to the season.

Kickoff is scheduled for 7 p.m. Both teams are 4-1 overall and 1-0 in district games.

Last year in Storm Lake, the Tigers beat the Tornadoes 17-14.

Isaiah Spencer led the Tigers in carries and yards gained, 20 for 103, last year. He scored one of the Tigers’ two touchdowns on a 21-yard run.

Spencer – both Isaiah and the team itself – will again bring a strong ground attack in search of its fifth consecutive victory.

This year, Isaiah has team highs of 128 carries for 729 yards and nine touchdowns. He hasn’t been held to fewer than 100 yards rushing in any game yet this season.

The Tigers defense could have a say in tonight’s outcome. That unit hasn’t allowed more than two touchdowns since Spencer’s season opener against Spirit Lake, its only loss of the season.

Chase Hough leads Spencer’s defense with 36.5 tackles so far this year. He also leads the team with seven tackles for loss and four tackles for loss assists.

Isaac Pingel and Jacob Doran both have more than 20 tackles and three tackles for loss assists to their credit. Pingel has two sack assists, while Doran has had one tackle for loss.

TJ Arnold lead the team with two sacks.

Scouting Storm Lake

Storm Lake is coming off a road win against LeMars, 28-12. The Tornadoes scored all 28 points in the second half.

Storm Lake’s 4-1 record includes a forfeit by Humboldt from Week 3 of the season. That game ended 28-6 in Humboldt’s favor, but the team later forfeited because it used an ineligible player.

Kole Wiegert and Colton Dreith have been bright spots rushing the ball for Storm Lake. Wiegert has 63 carries for 275 yards and two touchdowns, while Dreith has 40 carries for 220 yards and two touchdowns.

Storm Lake quarterback Mark Eddie has completed 39 of 70 passes for 323 yards and two touchdowns. He’s thrown six interceptions, though.
