Mindy Nelson is trying to draw out a younger crowd with her new bar, Pour Judgement.

Pour Judgement, 223 and 225 Grand Avenue in Spencer, opened Tuesday and has its grand opening tonight.

Before the bar opened, a scrolling sign advertised it would have DJs and a dance floor Friday and Saturday nights.

“Trying to get the younger crowd back out here again and bring the night life back (to Spencer),” Nelson said.

On the bar side, patrons won’t see much difference between Pour Judgement and the previous establishment to occupy the space, Beer:30. Nelson just made a few lighting changes.

But the similarities don’t extend to the other side. Where Beer:30 had an arcade, Pour Judgement has a dance floor with lights, mirrors and room for a DJ.

Spencer hasn’t had a bar with a dance floor – that’s stuck around long, at least – since Sarge’s closed in 2015.

Located at 5 East 21st Street, Sarg’s was a longtime part of Spencer’s nightlife scene.

Nelson wants to revive that scene – and hopes Pour Judgement leads that effort.

Part of that, she said, is having a dance floor.

“Once (Sarg’s) shut down, we didn’t have another one,” Nelson said. “We’re bringing one back and we’ve got a tremendous light show.”

This is Nelson’s first time owning and operating a bar. She’s worked as a bartender, but wanted to be her own boss.

“I wanted to bring something like this in because nobody else does it,” she said.

The bar side of Pour Judgement will be open throughout the week. Happy hour is from 2-7 p.m. Nelson said Pour Judgement will serve typical bar food.
