An Everly man was arrested last Friday night following an incident with a high school basketball referee.

The Clay County Sheriff’s Office reported Corey Hofmeyer was arrested for simple assault after, according to a report, the parent ran his shoulder into a referee at a basketball game at Clay Central-Everly High School.

The report stated a school official called the sheriff’s office to report the incident when the referee, Marshall Doeden of Arnolds Park, said he wished to press charges.

Hofmeyer told a deputy that he had accidentally brushed up against the referee. He apparently had left the game before being contacted by law enforcement investigating the incident.

The report stated Hofmeyer is a parent of a student on the Clay Central-Everly team.

Hofmeyer was barred from attending future Clay Central-Everly.
