A Spencer man led deputies on a vehicle chase that exceeded speeds of 120 mph Saturday evening before he eventually crashed into a ditch and was arrested.

The Clay County Sheriff’s Office reported deputies tried to stop a vehicle driven by Joshua Alvin Kunath, 31, for speeding as he was driving south in the 3600 block of Highway 71.

Kunath did not pull over for deputies when they tried to catch up and stop him.

Deputies followed Kunath at speeds over 120 mph until Kunath lost control of the vehicle. He crashed into a ditch at 420th Street and Highway 71.

Kunath had a passenger in the vehicle at the time. Neither he nor the passenger were injured, according to the sheriff’s office.

Kunath was taken into custody at 7:49 p.m. He was charged with eluding, reckless driving, speeding (120 mph in a 55 mph zone) and failure to maintain control.

The passenger was released without charges.

Kunath was held in the Clay County Jail to appear before the magistrate.
