DES MOINES – The American Institute of Architects, Iowa Chapter (AIA Iowa) is pleased to announce the winners of the third annual People’s Choice Award. Throughout the competition that lasted the month of April, the public had the opportunity to vote for architecture built by Iowa’s architects. The public could vote once per project per day through IowaArchitecture.org and at the end of the month, nearly 544,000 votes were counted.
The Top 5 People’s Choice Award Winners:
1st place: Spencer High School Fine Arts Center Addition by CMBA Architects
2nd place: Linn-Mar Community Schools High School Addition and Renovation by DLR Group
3rd place: University of Northern Iowa – Schindler Education Center by DLR Group
4th place: YALI Regional Leadership Center – East Africa by DLR Group
5th place: MMCRU Royals Industrial Technology Addition by CMBA Architects
Thirteen projects were submitted for consideration by the community, including many schools and public buildings. This year saw a marked increase in community participation. Last year this program collected a total of 125,000 votes. In 2019, it soared to 544,000!

Throughout the addition, large volumes of space were created to allow light to envelop the Commons through clearstory windows. School colors and graphics infuse the space, giving the students a sense of ownership and
pride. Soft seating located throughout the space not only serves the students during the day, but can accommodate visitors to the building for Fine Arts performances and other hosted events.
