A long-time food stand at the Clay County Fair has changed ownership.
The stand – located just north of the “Dish Plaza” – has been operated by the Spencer Kiwanis After 5 Club since 2002.
Over the years the food stand has been known for its handmade malts and sundaes, as well as brats and loaded baked potatoes.
Due to the majority of the club members’ busy work/volunteer schedules during the fair, the club felt it was in their best interest to sell the food stand. After working closely with Clay County Fair management to identify potential buyers, an agreement was made with the Spencer Family YMCA to become new owners of the food stand.
“We were thrilled to be able to sell the stand to another local organization who benefits not only the community of Spencer, but also Clay County and the surrounding area,” said Kristi Franker, President of Spencer Kiwanis After 5.
Spencer Y’s Service Club Treasurer, Rod Meendering said: “When we learned the After 5 members were looking at selling, we began discussions on how this could benefit us. Our goal for the building will be to make some minor upgrades and turn it into our fairground headquarters for making our famous nutty bars.”
For several years, the food stand was located where the new Tower Gate Pavillion now sits on the fairgrounds. In 2016 when construction of the Tower Gate Pavillion began. the food stand structure was moved to its current location on “Food Row” near Dish Plaza.
