Arts on Grand’s Art Barn has always been a draw for creatives and supporters of the arts at the Clay County Fair.
This year, the Art Barn has added a new feature called “Plein Air at the Fair,” a painting festival at various fairground locations throughout the duration of this year’s event. Different artists picks a place to create his or her art and fair visitors are able to enjoy watching the process.
“It basically means painting outdoors,” Arts on Grand Executive Director Ryan Odor said of the name. “So every day – Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday, Friday, Saturday – we have a different painter that’s going to be on the grounds just hanging out painting what they see. That’s something brand new this year.”
The idea for Plein Air at the Fair, Odor said, originated when a board member saw a similar event at the Iowa State Fair and suggested the Art Barn should do the same.
Odor has said Plein Air is already slated to return next year.
Art Barn attractions
As for the Art Barn itself, local and regional artists can be found inside selling their works.
“Authors, jewelers, potters, painters, woodworking and a variety of other things going on,” Odor said. “We also have music acts every day from 1 to 3 p.m.”
Artisans Road Trip coming up in October
After the fair, Arts on Grand is preparing for another of its annual events, Artisans Road Trip.
“Many of the artists within the Lakes Corridor open up their studios over the course of the weekend of Oct. 12 and 13,” Odor said. “It allows you to take a little road trip and go from studio to studio to see what they work on.”
Beginning in October, the Arts on Grand gallery will include pieces from the artists participating in this year’s event.
