Updated floodplain maps available at city hall

The city has received updated proposed floodplain maps that are available at city hall for the public to review.

Once finalized, the map will set flood boundaries for 100- and 500-year floods.

At last week’s city council meeting, Spencer Planning Director Steve Hallgren said there should be public meetings to review the maps with the Iowa Department of Natural Resources closer to the end of November.

Hallgren said the good news regarding the new maps came in the form of a preliminary status of map adjustments for properties in Spencer that have received a map amendment in the past.

“In Spencer, there’s quite a few (of those properites),” Hallgren said. “There’s upwards of 150. Of that, there’s only 24 properties that the new map did not honor that map amendment.”

Those property owners will be notified and have a chance to respond, he said.

A meeting for realtors, lenders and insurance representatives could be held in early November.

Anyone with questions can contact Hallgren and the city planning department.
