Officials continue to investigate a small house fire during which Spencer firefighters found a man dead inside the home.
Spencer Fire and Rescue responded to 1408 13th Ave. West at about 10:06 a.m. Monday for a report of house fire with an occupant possibly still inside.
Firefighters found light smoke conditions inside when they entered the home. While searching for the fire source and the occupant, firefighters opened a closed bedroom door, found the source and 72-year-old Lawrence Donald Bendlin, who was dead.
One room in the house sustained fire damage, while smoke damage was reported throughout the residence.
The fire remains under investigation.
Spencer Fire and Rescue responded with 21 firefighters who were on the scene for three hours.
The department was assisted by the State Fire Marshal’s Office, Spencer Hospital Paramedics, Spencer Police Department, Clay County Sheriff’s Office and the Clay County Medical Examiner.
Spencer firefighters found a body inside a home while responding to a small fire on Monday.
The Spencer Fire Department responded to the fire Monday morning at 1408 13th Avenue West.
Fire chief John Conyn said Monday evening the body was that of the homeowner, Lawrence Bendlin. He was found dead.
Conyn said the cause of the fire remains under investigation.
