Moped driver in fatal accident identified as Spencer woman

A Spencer woman died of injuries she suffered Saturday afternoon when a pickup truck rear-ended the moped she was driving on US-71 in Dickinson County.

The Dickinson County Sheriff’s Office identified the moped driver as Laurie Peters, 59, in a news release posted to Facebook on Monday.

The accident occurred near the intersection of US-71 and 260th Street at 2:54 p.m. Saturday, the sheriff’s office stated.

That’s when a 2020 Dodge Ram and trailer driven by Bart Sullivan, 66, of Dunlap, ran into the rear of Peters’s 2018 Honda moped.

Both drivers were traveling north.

Sullivan didn’t see Peters, according to the sheriff’s office.

Peters was transported to Spencer Hospital with “incapacitating injuries,” the news release stated. She was then flown to Sioux Falls. She later died at the hospital there.

No other injuries were reported.

The accident is still under investigation.

The Dickinson County Sheriff’s Office thanked Iowa State Patrol, Lakes Regional Healthcare ambulance, Milford Fire and Rescue and Milford Police Department for assistance at the accident scene.
