Firefighters from Spencer and Everly fire departments battled a house fire for 3.5 hours Wednesday afternoon in Spencer.
Spencer Fire and Rescue was sent to 307 East Fourth Street at 2:30 p.m., where firefighters saw smoke from outside the residence, according to a press release.
Firefighters forced entry into the house and encountered high heat and heavy smoke conditions. They quickly found the fire started in the kitchen and extinguished it.
The owner was not home at the time of the fire.
The home suffered fire damage in the kitchen and up into the second floor. The house suffered heat and smoke damage throughout.
A total of 24 firefighters responded to the house fire.
Spencer Fire and Rescue is still investigating the fire. The department was assisted by Spencer Hospital Paramedics, Everly Fire-Rescue, Iowa State Fire Marshal and the Spencer Police Department.
