Cedar Rapids man killed in head-on collision involving semitrailer on U.S. 71

A Cedar Rapids man was killed in an accident Friday morning in the 4800 mile of U.S. 71 when his car swerved into the lane of an oncoming semi hauling an empty livestock trailer.

The Clay County Sheriff’s Office responded to the accident scene at 7:34 a.m. A news release from the sheriff’s office stated 24-year-old George Skyler Ellsworth Cole, of Cedar Rapids, was driving south in a 1987 Pontiac Firebird when he crossed into the north lane in front of a 2003 Peterbilt owned by King Cattle, LLC.

The car and semitrailer collided head-on.

A Clay County medical examiner pronounced Ellsworth Cole dead at the scene.

The driver of the semitrailer, 46-year-old Stoney Ray Burris, was transported to Spencer Hospital with minor injuries.

The Iowa State Patrol is investigating the accident.

Agencies at the scene were the Clay County Sheriff’s Office, Iowa State Patrol, Iowa Department of Transportation, Webb Rescue and Spencer Hospital ambulance.
