Game State moving into former Hallmark building

Game State moving into former Hallmark building

After years of sitting empty, the former Hallmark building on Grand Avenue is getting a new resident. Game State will be moving to the new location on September 1.

Game State is a store in downtown Spencer specializing in board games, card games, table-top games, and game accessories. Aside from selling games, Game State hosts open gaming and game tournaments.

Game State opened in November of 2014 at their current location, 8 W 5th St in Spencer.  Over the last six years, the store has grown in popularity in the community and surrounding area.

With their popularity it was time for the store to grow.

“The time just felt right,” said Kevin Rohan, owner of Game State. “We have outgrown this location. Our retail space is fairly limited because we have so much game space and we want the best of both worlds.”

The old Hallmark buildin, located at 414 Grand Avenue, has over 11,000 square feet compared to their current store’s 3,000 square feet.

Game State’s new location will allow them to have 20 times more inventory than their current location.

Given the bigger space, there are bigger plans for the future.

“There are a couple big Magic Tournament circuits we would like to be a part of, and we will have the ability to host one hundred players,” Rohan said. “All of the games we already do we will continue to do, just do them bigger and better.”

“We are looking forward to being on Grand,” he continued. “We are looking forward to getting a lot more visibility. We are looking forward to being able to hire a few more people.”

Game State plans to close the current location August 30 to move the new building, and reopen September 1.
