Spencer Hospital exceeds state, national averages for quality and value

For the sixth consecutive year, Spencer Hospital has achieved quality and cost efficiency outcomes which exceed both state and national averages as reported through a Medicare quality initiative. The Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services developed its quality initiative, called the Value Based Purchasing Program (VBP), over many years to assess hospital performance across a range of clinical, patient safety, patient experience and cost efficiency measures. “The methodology utilized by the Medicare program has increasingly emphasized linking payments to hospitals to overall value rather than the number of patients served,” explained Spencer Hospital President Bill Bumgarner. “This means quality outcomes and improvement efforts are measured and rewarded.”

To fund the VBP program nationally, all participating hospitals receive a 2% payment reduction for a specific range of Medicare services. Hospitals can earn the 2% back – partially or in full – and even a little extra for good outcomes.

Spencer Hospital to open new dialysis center

For more than 20 years, people in need of life-sustaining dialysis treatments have been able to receive care at the Warner Dialysis Center of Spencer Hospital, located within the hospital. In July, patients will transfer to a newly renovated facility located at 1721 West 18th Street, designed to meet the growing demand for services and to provide more convenient access to care. “Our patients and healthcare team are so excited to move into the new facility,” said Danette Forbes, dialysis services director. “With the move, we’ll increase the number of treatment stations from eight to 14, with space to add more stations, if needed.”

Forbes anticipates the facility will begin operation in mid-July. Prior to opening for patient care, the public is invited to an open house and tour on Tuesday, July 10 between 4:30-6:30 PM.
