Suspicious person complaint leads to Peterson man’s arrest for car burglaries, vehicle thefts

A Peterson man faces charges connected to multiple car burglaries and two vehicle thefts in Spencer. On Monday, the Spencer Police Department stated in a news release that Gary Stallings II was arrested June 11 after officers responded to a suspicious person complaint near 215 12th Avenue West. Officers arrived on scene that afternoon to find several individuals running away on foot from police. Law enforcement apprehended one of the men, Stallings, in the 800 block of 14th Avenue West. During an investigation, officers determined Stallings had been involved in multiple car burglaries and two separate vehicle thefts that occurred during the overnight hours in Spencer.

Milford woman arrested for brandishing firearm in road rage incident

A Milford woman was arrested June 5 after she allegedly brandished a firearm toward another driver during a road rage incident. The Clay County Sheriff’s Office received a call at about 4:45 p.m. June 5 from a driver heading north from Spencer on U.S. Highway 71 stating a woman had displayed a firearm at him. Milford police located the woman, 46-year-old Alace Welle, in Milford. Milford police and the sheriff’s office then interviewed Welle and the other driver. Welle was arrested at about 6 p.m. and transported to the Clay County Jail.

Cedar Rapids man killed in head-on collision involving semitrailer on U.S. 71

A Cedar Rapids man was killed in an accident Friday morning in the 4800 mile of U.S. 71 when his car swerved into the lane of an oncoming semi hauling an empty livestock trailer. The Clay County Sheriff’s Office responded to the accident scene at 7:34 a.m. A news release from the sheriff’s office stated 24-year-old George Skyler Ellsworth Cole, of Cedar Rapids, was driving south in a 1987 Pontiac Firebird when he crossed into the north lane in front of a 2003 Peterbilt owned by King Cattle, LLC. The car and semitrailer collided head-on. A Clay County medical examiner pronounced Ellsworth Cole dead at the scene. The driver of the semitrailer, 46-year-old Stoney Ray Burris, was transported to Spencer Hospital with minor injuries.

Spencer, Everly departments fight house fire on East 4th Street

Firefighters from Spencer and Everly fire departments battled a house fire for 3.5 hours Wednesday afternoon in Spencer. Spencer Fire and Rescue was sent to 307 East Fourth Street at 2:30 p.m., where firefighters saw smoke from outside the residence, according to a press release. Firefighters forced entry into the house and encountered high heat and heavy smoke conditions. They quickly found the fire started in the kitchen and extinguished it. The owner was not home at the time of the fire.

Driver suffers ‘non-life threatening’ injuries in overnight accident

A Spirit Lake man suffered what authorities called “non-life threatening” injuries in an accident shortly before 3 a.m. Wednesday in the 2400 mile of 350th Street. The Clay County Sheriff’s Office reported Robert Peters was driving a 2011 Silverado east when he was approaching the S curves in the road. Peters went off the roadway at the curve. The truck collided with the railroad crossing arm assembly. The pickup truck was listed as totaled in the crash report.

Man assaults clerk, deputy at Spencer hotel

Authorities arrested a man for assaulting a hotel clerk and a Clay County Sheriff’s Office deputy at Days Inn after midnight Saturday. The sheriff’s office stated deputies were called to the 1800 mile of 350th Street to serve a no contact order where Ismael Leon Rodriguez, of Spencer, was no longer allowed. Rodriguez was given a ride to Days Inn. While there, Rodriguez assaulted the clerk and a deputy, authorities said. Rodriguez was arrested for assault and taken to the Clay County Jail.

Stolen truck found at gravel pit near Graettinger

A stolen truck was recovered Sunday at a county gravel pit near Graettinger. The Clay County Sheriff’s Office stated the truck, a 2018 Ford F350 owned by Iowa Lakes Electric, had been reported as stolen form a residence on Highway 18 west of Ruthven. The truck was taken from the residence sometime between the evening of May 23 and the morning of May 24. Authorities stated the truck was discovered at the gravel pit where they determined there was an attempt to dispose of the truck in the water. However, the truck got stuck in loose gravel and did not enter the water.

Suspicious person call leads to discovery of stolen vehicle, woman’s arrest

Spencer police arrested a woman on Saturday after receiving a call about a suspicious person and learning the woman had driven a stolen vehicle to Spencer. Police Chief Mark Warburton stated in a news release that police arrested 32-year-old Alyson Weathers, who police stated was homeless, after responding to the 100 block of Fourth Street SE for the suspicious person call. Police were told that the person was in a residence and refusing to leave, according to the news release. Officers found Weathers when they arrived. They also found a vehicle that she “had allegedly driven to Spencer,” according to the news release.

Milford woman dies in car, semi head-on collision

A Milford woman died in an accident on Highway 18 Tuesday after the car she was driving collided head-on with a semi-trailer. A press release from the Clay County Sheriff’s Office identified the woman as Lori Hott. The release stated Clay County dispatch had received a report Tuesday of a reckless driver who was “all over the road” west of Everly. A short while later, at 1:07 p.m., dispatch was alerted to an accident with injuries at the 100th Avenue and Highway 18 intersection. When deputies arrived, they determined Hott had been traveling west on Highway 18 when the 2012 Toyota Camry she was driving crossed the center line.

Minor injuries reported after pickup rolls, catches fire

Minor injuries were reported in a single-vehicle accident last week in which a pickup rolled and caught fire in the 2400 block of 330th Street northeast of Spencer. The Clay County Sheriff’s Office reported Cody Sharrow, 25, was driving a 2008 Ford F350 east on 330th Street at about 9 p.m. April 24. Sharrow reportedly was accelerating too quickly when the road changed from pavement to gravel. Sharrow then lost control of the truck, which entered the north ditch, according to the sheriff’s office. The truck then rolled and caught on fire.
