Most people in Spencer would love to see something fill the Glass Block building, also known as the Hallmark building, on Grand Avenue. It was not surprising then to see McClure include a suggestion for the property in its creative placemaking plan, which would establish a Spencer Arts District and provides a road map to expand on and enhance arts and culture in the community. Though there are other priorities that come first and are more central to McClure’s plans, the firm does recommend eventually creating a shared, multi-use arts and culture facility in the Glass Block building. But the organization used as an example for that idea and promoted by Spencer officials, the Des Moines Social Club, is struggling financially and looking for a sustainable path forward, its board of directors acknowledged earlier this month. That would seem to bring up questions about how a shared use arts and culture facility in Spencer could avoid a similar situation.
