Rollover on U.S. 71 sends two to hospital

Two people were transported to Spencer Hospital Thursday night after the vehicle the pickup truck they were in entered a ditch and rolled on U.S. 71. The Clay County Sheriff’s Office reported deputies were dispatched to the 4600 mile of U.S. 71 at 7:17 p.m. Thursday. Deputies determined Rosa Guadiana Escalmilla, 27, of Storm Lake, was driving a 2005 Dodge Dakota south when she lost control of the truck due to too much weight in the truck bed. The pickup lost traction, entered the east ditch, rolled and landed on its tires facing northwest. Escamilla and a passenger were evaluated and transported to the hospital with suspected head and neck injuries.

Cedar Rapids man killed in head-on collision involving semitrailer on U.S. 71

A Cedar Rapids man was killed in an accident Friday morning in the 4800 mile of U.S. 71 when his car swerved into the lane of an oncoming semi hauling an empty livestock trailer. The Clay County Sheriff’s Office responded to the accident scene at 7:34 a.m. A news release from the sheriff’s office stated 24-year-old George Skyler Ellsworth Cole, of Cedar Rapids, was driving south in a 1987 Pontiac Firebird when he crossed into the north lane in front of a 2003 Peterbilt owned by King Cattle, LLC. The car and semitrailer collided head-on. A Clay County medical examiner pronounced Ellsworth Cole dead at the scene. The driver of the semitrailer, 46-year-old Stoney Ray Burris, was transported to Spencer Hospital with minor injuries.

Moped driver in fatal accident identified as Spencer woman

A Spencer woman died of injuries she suffered Saturday afternoon when a pickup truck rear-ended the moped she was driving on US-71 in Dickinson County. The Dickinson County Sheriff’s Office identified the moped driver as Laurie Peters, 59, in a news release posted to Facebook on Monday. The accident occurred near the intersection of US-71 and 260th Street at 2:54 p.m. Saturday, the sheriff’s office stated. That’s when a 2020 Dodge Ram and trailer driven by Bart Sullivan, 66, of Dunlap, ran into the rear of Peters’s 2018 Honda moped. Both drivers were traveling north.

Rollover causes minor injuries

A rollover accident Thursday morning on US-71 sent a Milford man to a hospital with minor injuries. At 8:38 a.m. Thursday, the Clay County Sheriff’s Office and other agencies responded to the 2700 mile of US-71. The sheriff’s office stated Christopher Coleman-Samuels, 28, had been driving a vehicle south when it lost control. The vehicle then went into the median and rolled twice before landing upright in the northbound lanes. Coleman-Samuels was taken to a hospital with minor injuries.

Goat Hill accident on Hwy. 71 Tuesday resulted in minor injuries

An accident Tuesday morning that closed US 71 near Goat Hill south of Spencer for a couple of hours resulted in minor injuries. The Clay County Sheriff’s Office reported deputies responded to the accident at 7:48 a.m.

A sheriff’s office report indicated a 2010 Peterbuilt tractor-trailer driven by Gary Kringen, 36, of Sibley, and owned by Bosma Poultry turned south onto the highway from 460th Street. At that time, a 2018 Ford F-150 driven by Mellissa Berkland, 32, of Grimes, was traveling south and hit the rear end of the tractor-trailer. A third vehicle, a 2018 Ford Expedition driven by Mark Fredericks, 59, of Hartley, was traveling behind Berkland and struck the rear end of her truck. Both the F-150 and Expedition were totaled, according to the report.
